Dear Friends,

It’s become a familiar punch line over the last few years. And it’s spawned a wide variety of memes along the way.

I’m talking about the saying to someone, after an epic fail of some sort “You had one job…”

Have you ever asked yourself about your “one job?” As a follower of Jesus, an Ambassador for Christ, what would you say your top priority ought to be?

The Westminster Catechism famously declares that our “chief end” is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

In ancient Israel, the Jews would remind themselves of their “one job” twice every day, as morning and evening, they would recite the Shema prayer found in Deuteronomy 6: “Here O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”

When everything in your life flows from your love for God, your actions and attitudes are recalibrated. The filter for every decision you face in life is singular. Because of your love for God, you want everything about your life to bring joy to the One you love.

Because we still battle with indwelling sin, we daily default to making choices based on what we believe will bring us joy. Our own joy is our default “one job.”

But as the Psalmist reminds us, it is when we are with God, in fellowship with Him, loving Him and experiencing His love for us, that we find not some kind of substitute, temporary joy, but an eternal, unquenchable joy.

Today, and tomorrow, and the day after, you have one job. Love God. With your heart. And soul. And all your might.

It’s the one job that brings real joy.

So, you remember what Sunday is, right? Dads? Have you thought about helping the kids make plans to honor mom?

Kendall White will be back to lead our music. And we’ll join with a number of moms and dads this Sunday as they dedicate their children to the Lord. If you’d like to dedicate a child on Sunday, check out the info here and let Cathy Crowell know if you’re interested in being part of the ceremony.

If you haven’t yet let Matt Gurney know that you’re interested in the New Members class scheduled for Saturday, May 19, now is the time. There is some light reading required and a few videos to watch before the Saturdaymeeting, so you’ll need a little time to get ready. Contact Matt Gurney if you’re interested in being part of the class –

And if you’re ready to be baptized, now is the time to let us know about your interest in publicly declaring your love for Jesus.

If you’ve never been part of a baptism service at Redeemer, get ready for a treat. When we baptize folks, we party!

Here are the details for our upcoming baptism.

Romans 13 says God has given a sword to the governing authorities. For what purpose? Capital punishment? To wage war? And does a Christian have to pay his taxes if the government is using the money to advance evil?

All ahead this Sunday.

See you in church.

Soli Deo Gloria!
